About James H. Cole Home for Funerals
James H. Cole Home for Funerals was founded in 1919 by James H. Cole Sr., the grandson of a freed slave, opening its first location at 1710 St. Aubin Street in Detroit's Black Bottom neighborhood. The funeral home celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019 and remains owned and operated by four generations of the Cole family. Originally established to serve predominantly Black families who were frequently turned away by white undertakers, the business has grown to operate two Detroit locations.
