Hickson Funeral Home traces its history to 1924, when Minnie L. Brown established the Arcadia Funeral Home in DeSoto County, making it the oldest continuously operated funeral home in that county. Eugene Hickson, Sr., a second-generation funeral director and graduate of Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science, purchased the business from his grandmother in 1960 and renamed it Hickson Funeral Home. In 1979, he became the first African American mayor of Arcadia.
The business remains family-owned across three generations. Edward Hickson, trained by his father from age 12, is a licensed funeral director and embalmer who now operates locations in both Arcadia and Fort Myers. Before EMT services became widespread, the funeral home also served as the ambulance provider for DeSoto County.
The Fort Myers location serves families in Lee County and surrounding areas with burial and cremation services, veterans benefits assistance, and pre-planning programs.
