Rock Hill, SC – Mr. William Herbert Borders, Jr, went home to be with His Lord on Sunday, January 11th at his home following an extended illness.
Born May 5, 1920, to the late Herbert and Laura Falls Borders of Shelby, NC, Mr. Borders grew up on the family farm, the oldest of nine children. A graduate of No. 3 High School, he pursued his dream and became a lifelong farmer, raising cotton, corn and cattle. He also enjoyed growing beautiful roses. He was the recipient of the Farm and Home Development Award along with his brother Henderson, his business partner. He was also named an Honorary State Farmer by the Future Farmers of America. W.H. was a member of the York County Cattleman’s Association, SC Farm Bureau, and also served on the Operation Round-Up Trust Board of the York Electric Co-op.
During WWII, Mr. Borders was a member of the 92nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Armored “Hellcat” Division under General Patton’s Third Army. His unit saw action in France and Germany and also liberated at least two concentration camps.
Mr. Borders was a charter member of Eastview Baptist Church and was instrumental in the construction of the church. He served as chairman of deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, chairman of the building committee, on the pulpit committee and various other functions. He was also a Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Mr. Borders was the epitome of a family man. He loved and was very proud of his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Robert Borders of Shelby, Eunice Rhyne of Sanford, NC, and Henderson Borders of Rock Hill, SC. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rebecca Kendrick Borders, his son, Tommy Borders (Tricia) of Honey Brook, PA, his daughters, Suzanne Clark (Dennis) of Fort Mill, SC and Beth Younts (Worth) of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Becky Clark Fitzsimmons (Scott) of Easley, SC, Reid Clark of Charlotte, Tim Clark (Shara) of Fort Mill, Katie Clark Hill (Steven) of Charlotte, Heath Borders (Nicole) of Westfield, NJ, Chris Borders (Jen) of Murraysville, PA, Seth Borders of Downington, PA, Allen Younts (Charity) of Asheboro, NC, and Stephen Younts of Asheboro, NC; great grandchildren, Nathan and Patrick Fitzsimmons, Isaac and Olivia Clark, Thomas and Logan Hill, Madelyn and Charlotte Borders, and Ethan Borders. Also surviving are sisters, Sara Self of Charlotte, NC, Charlotte Plemmons of Asheville, NC, Ruth Hendrix of Charleston, WV, and Jewel Brown of Gastonia, NC and one brother, Elzie Borders of Davidson, NC.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Eastview Baptist Church, Rock Hill, SC with interment following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service.
