Virginia "Ginger" Allen

Virginia Wilkerson Allen “Ginger”
Virginia “Ginger” Allen, 79, passed away on November 30, 2015 at home surrounded by her family. Born on October 17, 1936, in Hickory Grove, SC, Ginger was the youngest and last surviving of the nine children of the late Ora Inman Wilkerson and William Beatty Wilkerson.
Ginger graduated from Limestone College in 1958 with a degree in Physical Education. A long time resident of Charlotte, Ginger was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church. She taught school in the Cherryville school system, was employed by Travel Unlimited and Luwa Group, and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry for many years.
Ginger enjoyed bridge, bowling, and playing tennis, and followed college and professional sports closely. She and her husband, Bill, traveled extensively: criss-crossing the country five times, visiting every state and taking multiple trips to at least ten foreign countries.
Ginger created a welcoming home for her family providing wonderful meals and happy holiday celebrations. She always hosted the traditional black-eyed peas meal on New Year’s Day, gave chocolate bunnies at Easter (no matter the age of her children and grandchildren), hosted a cookout for July 4th and a warm and festive celebration on Christmas morning. She always made sure that each family member’s birthday was celebrated.
Ginger leaves behind her husband of 57 years, William “Bill” Allen, her son Mike Allen and wife Alison, her daughter Judy Latham and husband Chuck, and granddaughters Kelsie Allen and husband-to-be Ben Barton, and Jordan Allen. She enjoyed a rich and full life engaged with friends and a large, loving extended family and her absence will be felt deeply.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Memorial United Methodist Church on Central Avenue, officiated by Reverend Don Newman and Ginger’s nephew, Reverend Tom Sherer. The family will receive visitors after the service. The members of Trinity Sunday School will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry or Memorial United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Bratton Funeral Home in York, SC. Online condolences may be made at BrattonFuneralHome.com.
