Thomas Henry Smith, Sr.

October 13, 1929 ~ October 27, 2017 | 88

Thomas Smith, Sr.

Henry, Granddaddy, was a man of the earth. He grew up in a farming family and taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, a firm handshake and a respect for truth.
He had a 70 year romance with the love of his life, Rachel Bigger Smith. Both were born and raised in York and both loved calling York home. He loved his family unconditionally and spending time with them was his favorite thing.
He also loved riding horses and camping, fishing, raising a garden, cutting firewood, the Tar Heels, Major League Baseball, especially the Dodgers, the NFL and the Packers, and anything to do with cooking, eating and hot sauce.
For many years he was the owner of the York Barbershop, the "Best Little Hairhouse in Town" as his sign said. He delighted in the stories and characters that filled the shop and in giving free haircuts to local ball players who hit home runs or scored touchdowns. For many years after he sold his shop and retired he continued to give haircuts and shaves in hospitals and nursing homes. He rarely mentioned these acts of kindness or accepted compensation. He was also employed, for over 40 years, by Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company and served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, Henry is survived by his son, Thomas Henry Smith, Jr. (Vicki), daughter, Susan Smith Blair, sister, Harriett S. Childers (Samuel, “Smoke”), grandchildren, Jillian Smith Dodson, Thomas Jordan Smith (Lindzee), Eli Andrew Smith, Casey Shane Smith, Shannon Smith Blair, John Thomas Blair, and great granddaughter, Ansley Rose Dodson.
The family will receive friends from 1-2PM in the Trinity United Methodist Church Parlor on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 2PM with Reverend Josh Blackwelder officiating. Burial will be at Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery.
