Sam Howie

Henry Sanford Howie III (Sam) died on April 23, 2014 at his home in Spartanburg, SC. He was born in York, SC on March 3, 1963. A graveside service will be held in York at the Rose Hill Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Saturday April 26. A memorial service will be held in the Daniel Recital Hall on the campus of Converse College in Spartanburg at 11:00 am on Monday April 28. The family will receive friends afterwards.
Sam is survived by his son, Henry Jedidiah Howie, and Jed’s mother Margaret Sullivan. He is also survived by his sisters Lynda Lovelace of Columbia, Ann Hood of Rock Hill, Jenny Simmons of Fort Mill, and his brother Marc Howie of Fort Mill, as well as their spouses and a number of nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his father and mother, Henry Sanford and Betty Jane Howie.
A 1985 graduate of Clemson University, Sam earned an MBA from Winthrop University, an MEd from Converse College, and an MFA from Vermont College. He was an instructor in the English Department of Converse, where he was the Director of the Writing Center.
As a writer, Sam contributed essays to a number of journals. He was also the author of a collection of short stories, Rapture Practice.
Sam was a great mentor to all his students at Converse. He was a talented musician, having written and played a number of songs for his family and friends. His smile, intellect and wit will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Day School, where Jed is a student, Converse College, York Place in York SC, or to a charity of your choice in Sam's name.
