Ruth Burns
OBITUARY
HICKORY GROVE
Ruth Maggie Elizabeth Lanier Burns, 94 passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015, peacefully with her family at her bedside after a brief illness. Ruth lived all of her life in Hickory Grove, SC. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She married Lawrence Allen Burns in 1938 and early in their life together they were involved in establishing the Hickory Grove Church of God and were part of the original twelve charter members. Ruth served in numerous roles in the early days of the church and was the last remaining charter member.
Ruth started her career in the health field in 1965 at Divine Saviour Hospital. Later on she served numerous families and their loved ones in the greater York and Western York County providing in-home care. Her greatest enjoyment was serving others in need and she continued to provide in-home care until her retirement at age 85.
Ruth enjoyed the outdoors and growing fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. She was known for her ‘green thumb’ and continued to have a vegetable garden despite her failing eyesight with the help of her oldest son. She was an extraordinary role model for her children and grandchildren. Her strong sense of faith resonated throughout her life. Even with failed eyesight she continued to be courageous and remained independent in her own home until her recent illness.
Ruth was born on July 7, 1921 to Eddie Edwin and Fannie Jackson Lanier of Hickory Grove, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence, sister’s Eunice Brakefield, Reola Grant, and Ruby Horne; a brother, David Lanier, a grandchild and a great grandchild.
