YORK – Philip Lawrence Briggs, 67, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2017 surrounded by those who love him.
A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Union Baptist Church, 1945 Ratchford Road, York, SC 29745, with Rev. Ray Long and Rev. Roger Shuford officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Phil lived a life of quiet service. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Service Star Medals, and the Combat Infantryman Badge for his meritorious bravery in Vietnam as an Army Infantryman in 1970-71.
Phil loved learning and sharing his knowledge with others. Having earned the Master Electrician designation, Phil shared his expertise with Central Piedmont Community College students for more than 25 years. Attending college while working full time, he graduated magna cum laude from Western Carolina University. A lover of nature, Phil was an avid outdoorsman and his favorite time was enjoying a campfire. He shared his passion for the outdoors with the Boy Scouts and its Explorer troops for many years and was honored to take two troops to the national Jamboree at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Phil had many interests including fishing, reading, photography, gardening, Tai Chi, geocaching, camping, and hiking. He was a devoted Carolina Tarheels fan. Phil will be remembered fondly for his brilliant blue eyes, his quick sense of humor, his warm smile, his loving heart, and his strong spirit will live on in the many people whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife Susan Oleson, children; TL Wheeler, Katie Parker (Garrett), Kristen Rouzer (Drew), grandchildren; Ashlee Bryant (Jeffery), Hudson Rouzer, and Kensington Parker. Phil was also survived by his close friends the Buckingham’s, the Morrow’s, and the Payne’s.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to Agape Hospice of York, or to PAWS for Veterans.
