Obituary Notice
LaRue Burgess
LAKE JUNALUSKA -- LaRue Sherer Burgess was born to Luther Berry Sherer and Ellen Beatrice Pratt Sherer on December 21, 1921 in York County, SC. She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Raymond Hunter Burgess; her sister Shirley Price of Liberty, SC and her children: Edward E. Burgess, Jr. and his wife Judy of Lexington, SC; Raynene Sherer Burgess of Lake Junaluska, NC; grandson Edward E. Burgess, III and his wife Janet of Lexington, SC and their children Ariana and Justin; granddaughter Jennifer Burgess Pile and her husband Richard of Seminole, FL. and their children Zachary and Nathan; niece/daughter Martha Davis Towne and her husband Stan of N. Ft. Myers, FL; great-niece/granddaughter Lisa Davis; plus many loving nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Sharon High School and attended Winthrop Teachers College, graduating in 1942 with her BA’s in Elementary Education and English. She began her teaching career the fall after graduation in Sharon, SC. In January 1943 she married Edward Eugene Burgess, Sr., and their son, Edward E. Burgess, Jr. was born on June 17, 1944. Edward, Sr. was later killed in WWII combat in Germany, 1945.
On June 16, 1948 she married Raymond Hunter Burgess at her home in Sharon, SC. Raymond has been her loving and faithful companion, friend, and husband since.
LaRue and Raymond moved to Gainesville, FL in 1948 where she taught elementary school until shortly after their daughter, Raynene's birth in 1961. In 1958 she earned her Master of Arts in Elementary Education Degree from the University of Florida. They subsequently, moved to Tallahassee, Florida and then to South Florida, living in LaBelle, Clewiston, West Palm Beach, and Lake Placid. LaRue taught kindergarten and first grade wherever she lived, helping children for over 45 years. Wherever she and Raymond lived she stayed involved in her United Methodist church by teaching Sunday School, playing the organ and piano, singing in the choir and being active in United Methodist Women.
Besides having the gift of teaching children, LaRue was able to simply hear a song and then could play the same song by ear on the piano or organ. At Christmas parties, if there was a piano present, someone would always ask her to play and she'd sit right down and play it-no sheet music or book required.
In 2006, she and her family moved to Lexington, SC and in 2012 then moved to their vacation home in Lake Junaluska, NC. where she lived until her death.
She was always ready to help those in need and was a shining example of God's love and grace. LaRue gave her life to Christ as a youngster and her motto was that God loves you. She was a wonderful and loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Teacher who will be missed greatly by the many lives she touched.
