CLOVER – Katherine Massey Flanagan, 88, died September 24, 2013. Born October 15, 1924, in Etowah, Tennessee, to the late John W. and Grace Heinz Massey. She was the widow of William Wallace Flanagan, Sr. Katherine graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing and the Nurse Cadet Corps and enlisted in the US Navy Nurse Corps. She also graduated from Baylor University Anesthesia School. She proudly served at the Naval Hospitals in Memphis, TN; Lakehust, NJ; Oakland, CA; and Camp Lejeune, NC. She met her husband while stationed at the US Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC (he was her patient!). She received the National Defense Service Medal and held the rank of Lieutenant when she resigned from the Navy in 1956.
For thirty five years Katherine practiced anesthesia in North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and South Carolina. She was proud that many physicians requested her skillful services during surgical procedures. For many years she worked full-time at Presbyterian Hospital while also providing emergency anesthesia on weekends at surrounding hospitals.
Katherine was a member of the Clover Women’s Club, Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the women of the church, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Katherine is survived by one sister, Virginia Biggs of Deltona, FL. She is also survived by her children, Wallace Flanagan of Montreat, NC; Susanna F. Taylor of Clover, SC; Ernest L Flanagan (Susan) of Clover, SC; David M Flanagan (Cheri) of Clover, SC. She loved her six grandsons, Brian, Charles, William, Samuel, David, and John Mark. Katherine also had a host of special nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She was a Proverbs 31:10-31 woman and will be dearly missed.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Clover, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Flanagan’s name to the Thornwell Home for Children, 302 S. Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.
