Sharon – Jerry Lee West, 77, of 7457 Lockhart Hwy, Sharon, South Carolina passed away on December 3, 2016 at Piedmont Medical Center. He was born in Danville, Virginia on October 6, 1939 to Levi Hamilton West and Sareta Mason West. After living a short time in Baltimore, Maryland, his parents moved to Sharon, South Carolina. Following graduation from York High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959-1963 during the Cuban Crisis where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.
On November 29, 1964, he married Dianne Moss at Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church. They were blessed with two daughters, Elizabeth Renee Elson (Kenny) of Kokomo, Indiana and Crystal Daye Gardner (David, Sr.) of Sharon, South Carolina. Jerry is also survived by six grandchildren; Elizabeth Wickey (Matt) of Kokomo, Indiana, John Wickey (Alyssa) of Garrett, Indiana, James Wickey (Alesha) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Allen Gardner (Adalee) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Hanson Gardner, and Alexis Gardner of Sharon, South Carolina, and five great grandchildren; Rowan and Sutton Farmer of Kokomo, Indiana, Savannah and Huck Wickey of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Leighton Wickey of Garrett, Indiana.
Mr. West had a passion for history of Western York County. He began serving at Historic Brattonsville as a docent and served there for 20 years. He played many roles, but his favorite was portraying Colonel Bratton. Mr. West was also the minister of Christ’s Covenant Church in Sharon, South Carolina. In 1996, he retired from the ministry.
Mr. West enjoyed writing for The Herald and YC Magazine. He was also author of several books about the area. In 2002, he was awarded the Keeper of the Culture Award which was given by the York County Culture and Heritage Commission. He continued to pursue the development and founding of the Museum of Western York County, along with Co-Director, Earline Wilkerson. The museum was opened on June 5, 2003. He expressed his love for the Bullock’s Creek Community by working with the Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church to design commemorative memorial markers for the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice from each war. The latest recognition for his contributions to the area was given by the Broad River Basin Historical Society when they honored him with the Jerry West Appreciation Day on October 18, 2015.
The funeral for Mr. West will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Sharon A.R.P. Presbyterian Church with Rev. Gil Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 5, 2016 from 6 – 8 PM at Bratton Funeral Home in York.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Sharon A.R.P. Presbyterian Church’s landscaping fund, 3915 York Street, Sharon, SC 29742.
