YORK – Janet Marie Dykema Broadwell, 98, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill. Janet was born November 13, 1917, in Grand Rapids, MI, to Rev. Klaas J. Dykema and Grace Margaret Dykema. Her father was a Minister in the Reformed Church of America, and after Janet was born the family lived in Lester, Iowa, Adrian, Minnesota, Platte, South Dakota, and Fulton, Illinois, where her grandparents Dykema had settled after coming to America from the Netherlands.
She attended Central College, Pella, Iowa. When their A Cappella Choir of which she was a member was on tour she got off the bus in New Jersey to be near her sister, Claribel, wife of Rev. William Carman Trembath, also a minister in the Reformed Church. She lived in New Jersey for sixty three years. In 1942 she married Edward H. Broadwell, who pre-deceased her in 1990.
Janet was an avid golfer and Club Champion six times at various clubs. She remained an Elder in the Reformed Church of America. For a number of years, she was employed by Mono Service Co. and was the secretary to Elmer Z. Taylor, a survivor of the Titanic. For twenty years she volunteered in the Vocal Music Department of Teaneck High School under the direction of William E. Gilmer.
She retired to York, South Carolina, where she maintained her home until her death. She is survived by two nieces; Claire E. Bryson, daughter of Claribel, and Janet Lynn Laughlin, daughter of her brother, Lawrence.
