James Plummer, Sr

James Plummer, Sr. YORK – James Marshall Plummer, Sr., “Big Jim”, left us to be with Jesus on Friday, January 18, 2013. Jim was born in Charlotte, NC, to the late Henry B. and Mary Tyree Plummer. He was a hardworking young man that left home at age 14 to help support his family. Jim served his country for 2 years as a part of the Marine reserves at Camp Lejeune. Following this, he returned to Charlotte and earned both his high school and college degree which led to his becoming a state licensed heating and air conditioning HVAC contractor. Jim had a constant desire to learn his entire life and possessed an engineer’s mind. He continued his learning and obtained both a mechanical and electrical license. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do or at least figure out. Jim began his career working for Piedmont Natural Gas Company until starting his own company P.S. Heating and Air Conditioning in 1969 which he operated until 1995. Being self-employed allowed Jim time to pursue other interests and he spent many a weekend riding his Honda Goldwing around the beautiful southern countryside with the love of his life holding on tight enjoying the ride. He even found time to get away with the boys and brought back many a trophy for his excellent trap shooting skills. After his career at PS heating, he served for several years as the vice president of Gas Appliance Sales, Inc. After retiring from his real job, Big Jim began to pursue another passion that laid hidden all these years and began to engage on a journey of law enforcement. He was appointed as a State Constable where he served faithfully from 1996 to 2006, proudly representing the State of South Carolina and serving in multiple support roles with various local law enforcement agencies. It was here he earned the title “handsome grandpa” because of his natural good looks and distinguished uniform complete with badge and berretta. He served with great joy until his health forced yet another retirement. Jim had a passion for history, particularly the Civil War, and if one had an ear for listening he could recount battles and stories for hours. Jim lived a simple life and was content with what God had given him, a loving wife, a home in the country, beautiful kids and many a loyal dog. Jim is survived by his wife Tommie Hoffman Plummer who was the love of his life and made it her life’s passion to spoil him rotten for 56 years! She succeeded completely. He also leaves behind his son, James Marshall Plummer, Jr.; spouse Janet Bennett Plummer, and grandson James Marshall Plummer, III; his daughter Tonia Plummer Collins; spouse Jeffrey Collins; grandsons David and Kevin Collins. Jim’s surviving siblings include Jack Plummer, and Susie Cribb. The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 21, 2013 at First Wesleyan Church, 1830 York Hwy, York, SC with the Rev. Don Avore officiating. Burial will be Lakeview Memory Gardens, 1774 Filbert Hwy, York, SC. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 1 – 2 PM at First Wesleyan Church, York. Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 1830 York Hwy, York, SC 29745. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.brattonfuneralhome.com.
