James Northcott, Jr.
– James Gresham Northcott, Jr., 77, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016 after fourteen years of enduring the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s with grace.
Gresham was born February 3, 1939 to James Gresham Northcott, Sr., and Maye McBee Northcott of Black Mountain, NC. He was a graduate of Owen High School in Black Mountain, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Gresham moved to Charlotte after graduating from UNC where he began his career in the financial industry. In 1962 he met the love of his life, his wife of fifty two years Virginia Carroll Northcott.
Gresham began his career as a commodity broker with Harris Upham. He transitioned later into the insurance field where he was a member of the million dollar round table, court of the table, and top of the table. His true passion however was always the commodity market where he continuously tinkered for pleasure. Gresham was a director of the NC School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC, having been appointed by Gov. James Hunt. He was also a past member of the Charlotte City Club, and Myers Park County Club where for forty two years he thoroughly looked forward to the Sunday brunch.
Gresham always had smile, a kind word and never complained. Life was truly a joy even after he became terribly ill. He loved to read books, to watch Andy Griffith, gospel music, Joel Osteen, and Billy Graham who he once caddied for on the golf course in his teenage years. He also enjoyed watching Carolina basketball.
As a lifelong Methodist, Gresham loved his church and Sunday school class, The Wesley Class, at Myers Park United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Myers Park United Methodist Church with Rev. William E. Roth officiating. The burial will be private. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Jubilee Hall at Myers Park United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Carroll Northcott, their daughter Melia Northcott Hunt and her husband Dewitt Hunt, and grandchild Mary Hope Hunt of Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Myers Park UMC, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4124 Clemson Blvd, Anderson, SC 29621.
