Harriet Wilkins
It is with great sadness that the family of Harriet Ray Riddle Wilkins of York, SC announces that she passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the age of 68 at her home surrounded by family and friends after her courageous battle with cancer.
Harriet was born and raised in Blacksburg, SC by her wonderful parents, brother and extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends alike; she often called her childhood “storybook”. She graduated from Blacksburg High School and attended the University of South Carolina Spartanburg before marrying her high school sweetheart, Bill. She and Bill moved to York in 1974 to go to work for the York School District. Before her retirement, Harriet was a secretary at the district office of York School District # 1. She was a wonderful wife, mother, cook, crafter also fondly known as a “good maker,” hostess and friend to all; but most importantly and her crowning achievement was being the “best Gigi ever” to her grandsons.
Harriet is survived by her husband of 46 years, William S. “Bill” Wilkins, Sr. of York, her daughter, Katy and her husband, Robert Weckbacher of Mt Pleasant, SC, her son, Bill Jr. and his wife, Ashley Wilkins of Boiling Springs, SC, her three precious grandsons, Simms, Brooks and Elliott of Boiling Springs, SC that she said completed her life. She is also survived by her mother, Helen Elliott Riddle of Blacksburg, SC, and her brother, Ned and his wife, Jan Riddle of Edisto Island, SC. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward S. “Ned” Riddle.
A celebration of life will be held at 2pm on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 22 East Liberty Street, York, SC with Rev. Josh Blackwelder officiating. A visitation and reception will immediately follow the celebration of life in the Family Life Center of Trinity United Methodist Church. At other times, the family will be at the Wilkins’ home, 1875 Black Hwy, York.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to Marsha Black, who promised Harriet upon her initial diagnosis that when the time came she would use her “nursing skills” to take excellent care of her until the end. Marsha has exceeded all expectations of her “promise” to Harriet with the greatest of love and grace; and for that, we are forever grateful to her. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Harriet’s Hospice & Community Care home team who provided wonderful care to the entire Wilkins family. The Wilkins family is fortunate to be surrounded by many, many wonderful friends and family members that supported them all with love, cards, flowers, food and amazing support.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Harriet to Trinity United Methodist Church, 22 E. Liberty Street, York, SC 29745 or to the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
