Greer Fleetwood “Bill” Hiott, Jr.

Dr. Greer Fleetwood “Bill” Hiott, Jr. died peacefully at home on Friday, November 1, 2013. He was born on December 9, 1923 in Charleston, S. C. He grew up in Charlotte, N. C. where he graduated from Central High School. He was the son of the late Greer Fleetwood and Eunice Ackerman Hiott.
He served his country in Europe during World War II in the U. S. Army, 91st Chemical Mortar Battalion.
He graduated from Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. In 1952, he married his loving wife and nurse, Jeane, and moved to York. He faithfully practiced medicine in York and western York County for 42 years, never refusing to treat anyone who needed his services. From 1960 until 1980, he and Jeane, with others ran a well-baby clinic at the First Presbyterian Church. He retired in 1994.
He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, was a director of the Bank of York, served on the board of the former Divine Savior Hospital, and was a member of the York Crustbreakers Club for 47 years.
He is survived by his wife Jeane Elizabeth Haugen of 62 years, his children: John Andrew Hiott (Beth) of York, Ana Hiott “Kiki” Shelton (Bill) of Norman, Oklahoma, Mary Hiott Holmes (Kevin) of Charleston, Jane Hiott Carlisle (Joe) of Rock Hill, Judith Hiott Fair (Kelley) of Houston, Texas, and Eunice Hiott Blain (Randal) of Kirkwood, Missouri; his grandchildren: Myra Hiott Chapman (George) of Staunton, Virginia, John Andrew Hiott, Jr. (Joy) of York, Amanda Ruth Hiott of York, Kaisi Shelton of New York, N. Y., Kristin Carlisle Johnson (Beau) of Charleston, Lillian Jeane Carlisle of Greenville, Sarah Shepherd Carlisle of Charleston, Judith Fleetwood Carlisle of Greenville, Clara Bailey Farley (Scott) of Charleston, Forrest Tyler Bailey of Clemson, Kennedy Holmes of Richmond, Virginia, Logan Holmes of Columbia, Colten Holmes of Charleston, Margaret Emma Fair of Houston, Texas, and Mary Beth Overby (Joshua) of Fenton, Missouri; and great grandchildren: Parker and Sam Johnson of Charleston. A special thanks to caregiver and friend, Rosie McClure of York.
A memorial service will be held in the Family Life Center at the First Presbyterian Church in York on Monday, November 4, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. The family will receive friends at his home at 7 Bratton Avenue in York on Sunday afternoon from 2:00–5:00.
