YORK – Geraldine Bailes Dover, 74, of York, SC passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2021 peacefully at her home and surrounded by her loved ones.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Beersheba Cemetery Association Cemetery in Clover, SC with the Reverend John Hopkins officiating.
Geraldine was born on September 2, 1946 in York, SC. She was the daughter of the late Roy H. Bailes, Sr. and Martha Jane Snipes Bailes. She was the widow of Johnny Mack Dover. Geraldine worked at the Recycling Center for York County and was a member of Beersheba Presbyterian Church.
In the early 1990’s, Geraldine Dover was determined to support York County Hospice. Hospice had been there for her when her brother, Red Bailes, died and Geraldine wanted to give back. She participated in making a quilt with other grieving families and realized that hospice needed additional funds to provide services to the residents of York County. She created the annual Labor Day “Horseshoes for Hospice” at the Oak Grove to raise money for hospice. Over the next thirty years this event continued to help. York County Hospice became Hospice & Community Care and Horseshoes for Hospice is now known as Pitching and Riding. These events have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past thirty years, all due to the efforts and determination of Geraldine
Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Kris Jamieson, granddaughter, Megan McMahan (Chase), great grandchildren, Harper James McMahan, Marleigh McMahan, and siblings; Jim Bailes, Butch Bailes, Marvin Bailes, Bobby Bailes, Faye Johnson, Barbara Jean Singleterry, Ann Griffin, Leigh Burrell.
In addition to her parents and husband, Geraldine was preceded in death by her brothers, Bill Bailes and James “Red” Bailes.
