Gayle Spikes last gleam was peaceful and took place on January 1, 2026 at her home. Her first glimmer was on August 14, 1953 in Dublin, Georgia to the late Anderson Charleston Wilson Sr. and Althea Bates Wilson McClendon. She had a step-father, the late James McClendon. Gayle attended Dublin City Schools and graduated from Dublin High School in 1971. After high school, she attended Savannah State College and Swainsboro Technical School and received her Nursing license in 1981. Gayle went on to work for the VA Medical Center in Dublin, Georgia. She worked there from 1984 until retirement.
Gayle was known for her medical intelligence, quick wit, sassy spirit, and desire to help whomever she could. Even when she didn’t have it, she made efforts to help. If she was trying to borrow it, chances are, it was to help someone else. As a daughter, Gayle was devoted, as a sister, Gayle was tolerant, as a parent, she was intentional, defending, and lead via tough love. As a cousin, Gayle was protective, and as a friend she was an absolute joy to be around. Gayle, also known as “Koolaid” carried herself with confidence and authenticity. She was never afraid to be exactly who she was and say exactly what she meant. She knew how to enjoy life and encouraged others to do the same…laugh louder, love harder, sacrifice, work hard and play hard. That was how she lived her life. She will be lovingly remembered, tenderly missed, and eternally held dear.
She is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Clifton “Needham” Wilson and Sallie Mae Wilson, Edwin Bates and Slater Moore Bates, parents, Anderson Charleston Wilson Sr. and Althea Bates Wilson McClendon, stepfather, James McClendon, brother, Anderson Charleston “Luke” Wilson Jr., Aunts, Jessie Bates Ballard, Melba Baker, and beloved friend of many years, W.L. Marshall.
Gayle is survived by her husband, Carl Spikes, daughter, LaChanté Thomas of Virginia, granddaughter, Leyna Thomas of Virginia, son, Nicholas Spikes of North Dakota, cousins; Raymond Bain of Nevada, Tina Baker-Ivey (Johnny) Hansel Baker III, Edwin Maxell of Tennessee, Edwin Maxwell Jr., Aleah Maxwell and Brixton Maxwell all of Georgia, Mae Ruth Johnson of Illinois, Ardena Jenkins of Kentucky, Robina Jenkins, Rhonda Jenkins both of Alabama, Kathy Sims and Roy Johnson both of Illinois; extended family, Karen Stanley, Miah Stanley, and TJ Thomas all of Georgia; longtime friends, Willie Mae Wynn and Velma Vickers both of Georgia and a multitude of friends and community members who will hold on to her beautiful heart and contagious laugher.
Friends are being received at the family resident, 502 Marcus Street, Dublin, Ga.
