Uht Funeral Home traces its roots to the 1800s when the Uht family worked as cabinetmakers and coffin builders before Mantous Uht established the funeral home in Wayne in 1925. The funeral home also provided ambulance emergency services to the community during its early decades.

Founded in 1949 by Joseph B. Thompson, a 1945 graduate of Wayne State University of Mortuary Science, the funeral home was established as a true family business with his wife Hildreth, who notably served as cosmetologist and organist and used sign language to assist deaf and hearing-impaired families.
