Wintz & Ray Funeral Home traces its origins to 1874, when Josiah R. Sanborn established the firm alongside a furniture store on West Third Street. The business passed through several owners, including the Tenge family and A.G. Schenk, who moved operations to 5th and Cedar Street in 1923. Stanley G. Ray purchased the funeral home in 1977 and relocated it to its current location in 1986, before Jim and Kim Cantrell acquired the business in 1998.

The funeral home operates an on-site pet crematory and Garden of Memories Pet Cemetery, offering private pet cremation with return of remains or communal cremation with burial. A private viewing room allows families and their other pets to say farewell. The firm also maintains the Garden of Memories cemetery, a private, nonsectarian burial ground open to all families.

Wintz & Ray serves Yankton and surrounding communities in South Dakota and Nebraska, including Crofton and Hartington. The funeral home has operated continuously for over 150 years under various ownership families.
