Westbrock Funeral Home was founded in 1892 by Ben Westbrock, making it Dayton's first funeral home. The Wayne Avenue location operates inside an 1865 Italianate/Second Empire style house, built by Samuel D. Edgar as a wedding present to his daughter, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The funeral home remains family owned and operated by third and fourth generation Westbrocks.
Ben Westbrock received his early training as an undertaker following the Civil War and came to Dayton in 1887. He opened his own establishment at Wayne Avenue and Pearl Street in 1892, then acquired the current 1712 Wayne Avenue property in 1923 and transformed the historic residence into a modern funeral home. A second location opened in Kettering at 5980 Bigger Road in 1992.
