Wells Sheffield Funeral Chapel traces its origins to 1874, when carpenter L.J. Sheffield built his first walnut casket for a family friend and began operating a funeral service out of his general store. After Sheffield's death in 1936, his daughter Hattie Sheffield Allen obtained her Funeral Director's License, becoming one of the first licensed women funeral directors in Virginia, and continued the family business for another fourteen years.
The funeral home is the longest continuously operated business in Nelson County. Wells Sheffield serves families in Lovingston and the surrounding Nelson County area with funeral and cremation services.
