Walnut Lawn Funeral Home was founded by Bobby Dean Wood and Ruth Wood, who opened their first funeral home in Hartville before establishing their Springfield location. Bobby Wood, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, began working in the funeral profession as a teenager and celebrated his 50th anniversary in the field in 2014 after graduating from the Dallas Gupton-Jones Institute of Mortuary Science. Ruth Wood is both a registered nurse and licensed funeral director who earned her 50-year nursing certificate in 2011.
The funeral home operates DeGraffenreid-Wood-Crematory, an on-site crematory facility. The Woods raised their three children in the funeral business and built their practice on experience gained across Missouri communities including Hartville and the greater Springfield area in Greene and Christian counties.
