Pegues Funeral Directors was founded in 1891 when Walter E. Pegues, Lee County's first Superintendent of Education, formed Baskin and Pegues Furniture and Undertaking Goods. The funeral home has remained independent and family-owned for five generations, operating continuously in the Tupelo area for over 130 years.
The business relocated several times before settling at its current Jefferson Street location in 1952, when the Pegues family decided to focus exclusively on funeral service rather than furniture sales. After founder Walter Pegues died in 1910, the firm continued under the management of W. H. Berry and supervision of Walter's widow, Mary Reed Pegues, before passing to subsequent generations of the family.
The funeral home operates two locations, serving Tupelo, Saltillo, and surrounding Lee County communities. An on-site crematory ensures that families who choose cremation can keep their loved ones in the care of Pegues staff throughout the entire process. The funeral home offers live-streaming services for families and friends unable to attend in person, as well as tribute videos and memorial keepsakes.
