Vinyard Funeral Home traces its origins to 1907, when Thomas S. Byrd purchased the Festus Furniture and Undertaking Company on Main Street in Festus. Byrd's son-in-law Herbert Scott Vinyard joined the business in 1923, and after Anthony "Tony" Duester became a partner in 1928, the firm operated as Duester and Vinyard, Inc. until taking the Vinyard name in 1941.
Keith B. Vinyard later helped establish the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District in 1975 and served as an EMT instructor for the local community. The funeral home has served families throughout the Festus and Pevely area for over a century, evolving from the era of horse-drawn funeral coaches and telegraph-ordered caskets to modern motorized service.
In its early decades, the business operated both a furniture store and 24-hour ambulance service alongside funeral directing. The firm discontinued ambulance operations in 1975 when new state paramedic licensing requirements led to the creation of tax-based ambulance districts in Jefferson County.
