Tillman Funeral Home was founded in 1931 by Deacon Robert Clemon "C.T." Tillman Sr. and his wife Sevilla Burney Tillman as the first Black-owned funeral establishment in Jefferson County. The business expanded from its original Monticello location to serve families in Madison and Perry before establishing a presence in Tallahassee. In 1965, Deacon Tillman transferred day-to-day operations to his son William "Spike" Tillman, continuing the family's legacy of service.
The funeral home is currently led by Alfonzo "Al" Hall, a licensed funeral director who serves as President of A.L. Hall Funeral Directors, Inc. and CEO of Tillman Funeral Home. Deacon Tillman's contributions to civil rights and community service are memorialized at the Florida Civil Rights Museum, recognizing his role as a trailblazer during a time when African-American families faced significant barriers to accessing dignified funeral care.
