Thompson Funeral Home was founded by Joseph B. Thompson in 1949, after he graduated from Wayne State University of Mortuary Science in 1945. Joseph and his wife Hildreth began operations on East Forest and Brush before expanding to 7643 Dexter, where they added larger chapels, a casket showroom, and arrangement rooms in 1963. The family further expanded in 1974 with a location at 15443 Greenfield Road.

Hildreth Thompson served as public relations director, cosmetologist, and organist, and was skilled in sign language to assist deaf and hearing impaired families. The funeral home remains Michigan-owned and operated, serving families throughout Wayne County and the Detroit area. Services include burial, cremation, veteran burial benefits, and pre-planning assistance.
