Thompson Funeral Home was founded by Joseph B. Thompson in 1949, beginning operations on East Forest and Brush in Detroit. A 1945 graduate of Wayne State University of Mortuary Science, Thompson expanded the business to 7643 Dexter in the early years, then to a larger facility at that location in 1963 with multiple chapels, a casket showroom, and arrangement rooms. The family further expanded in 1974 with a building at 15443 Greenfield Road.

Joseph B. Thompson, who arrived in Detroit in 1938 and previously worked for Detroit Stove Company and the D.S.R., established the funeral home as a family-owned business with his wife Hildreth. Hildreth Thompson served as public relations director, cosmetologist, and organist, and used sign language to assist deaf and hearing-impaired families. The funeral home continues to operate as a Michigan family-owned business serving Detroit and Wayne County.
