St. Pierre-Phaneuf Funeral Chapels operates two locations in the Springfield and Chicopee area, with a history tracing back to 1930 when George St. Pierre, Sr. and his wife Marie founded the original Springfield home on State Street to serve the French Canadian population. In 1963, George St. Pierre, Jr. and his wife Virginia, both licensed funeral directors, opened a purpose-built funeral home at 7 Chapin Terrace in Springfield's North End near Baystate Medical Center.

Owner Paul A. Phaneuf, a 1973 graduate of the New England Institute of Anatomy, Sanitary Science, Embalming and Funeral Directing, purchased the Edward F. O'Donnell Funeral Home (established 1936) in Springfield in 1979. In 1984, he acquired the Blais Fairview Funeral Home at 506 Britton Street in Chicopee's Fairview section, a business with roots going back to 1902 when Calixte Blais opened his funeral service in Holyoke. The Chicopee location had been operated by Donald Blais since 1959.
