Shorter Funeral Home was established March 15, 1968 by Charles Russell Shorter Jr., a 1965 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. The funeral home has operated from the same location on South Main Street in Farmville since a dedication service was held there on April 21, 1968.
Manager Bernard Garrett, a Vietnam War veteran, has been affiliated with the funeral home for over 30 years. Staff member Thomas Borum, a Deacon at Pisgah Baptist Church in Rice, has worked with Shorter Funeral Home for over 40 years. Both licensed funeral directors work with families throughout Prince Edward County and surrounding areas.
