Shaffer Funeral Home traces its origins to B. T. Racey, the first funeral director and embalmer in Hampshire County. Earl Thrush purchased the business in 1938, operating it as Thrush Funeral Home on West Main Street until Keith and Ila Shaffer acquired it on July 1, 1955.
In 1959, the Shaffers purchased the historic Cornwell mansion and relocated the funeral home to that property, where it continues to operate today. Keith Shaffer ran the business alongside Glenn Shingleton and his wife Ila, who managed communications before the advent of modern phone systems. Their daughter Sarah became licensed in 1976, and son Mark joined the business in 1987 after Keith's passing.
The funeral home remained family-operated through multiple generations, with Sarah, Ila, Mark, and Glenn continuing the business into the 2000s. The Cornwell mansion provides a distinctive historic setting for services in Romney and throughout Hampshire County.
