Serenity Funeral Home and Cremation Service was founded in 1993 by Reverend Dwight O. Steele, Sr. The Roanoke location opened in 1996 at 126 Gilmer Avenue in the historic Gainsboro section of the city, taking over what was formerly C.C. Williams Funeral Home, a business established in 1910. The funeral home remains family-owned and operated by Steele Family Enterprises, Inc., with Rev. Dwight O. Steele, Sr., Mrs. Connie B. Steele, Dwight O. Steele, Jr., and Dwone O. Steele involved in operations.
The business also operates locations in Portsmouth and Clifton Forge. The Portsmouth chapel, opened in 1993, was formerly Wheeler's Funeral Home, owned by Nancy Thomas Wheeler, the first licensed female embalmer in Virginia and an NAACP leader who helped desegregate lunch counters in Portsmouth.
