About R Lewis & Sons Funeral Home

R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home was founded by Robert Lewis Sr. in 1914 at the corner of Beale and Fourth Street in downtown Memphis. The funeral home has served many prominent African-Americans, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Benjamin Hooks, Maxine and Vasco Smith, and Judge Odell Horton. Robert Lewis Sr. also owned the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro Leagues in 1922 and financed the construction of Martin Stadium, where opposing teams' players were lodged at the funeral home during the era of racial segregation.

The Lewis family has been noted for civic leadership throughout Memphis and Shelby County. Robert Lewis Jr. advocated for hiring the first African-American firefighters in Memphis in 1955, became the first African-American appointed to the city's Alcohol Beverage Commission, established the first Cotton Makers Jubilee, and worked to establish T. O. Fuller State Park. The funeral home provided Dr. King with a chauffeured limousine during his final visit to Memphis in April 1968.

The funeral home operates a second location on Austin Peay Highway and offers domestic and international shipping, notary public services, and funeral program design and printing. Staff members provide limousine and transport services as well as traditional funeral and cremation arrangements.
