Porter Funeral Home was established in Rock Valley in 1961 by Alvin Porter, who had founded his first location in Inwood, Iowa in 1956 after completing his apprenticeship in Sioux Falls. Randy Porter joined the family business in 1972 after graduating from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science, followed by Ric Porter in 1983 from the same institution. After Alvin's death in 1982, Randy and Ric expanded the operation by purchasing the VanDe More Funeral Home in Hudson, South Dakota in 1985 and the Dow Funeral Home locations in Hawarden and Ireton, Iowa in 1989.
The funeral home is now operated by Ric Porter and his wife Cynthia, who live in Hawarden, following Randy's retirement in 2017. The Porter family maintains four locations across the region, serving families in Rock Valley, Inwood, Hawarden, and Ireton in Iowa, as well as Hudson in South Dakota.
