Pegues Funeral Directors has served the Tupelo and Lee County area since 1891, operating under five generations of Pegues family ownership. The funeral home was founded by Walter E. Pegues, Lee County's first Superintendent of Education, who established the original business as Baskin and Pegues Furniture and Undertaking Goods on Main Street in Tupelo. After Walter Pegues' death in 1910, management passed to W. H. Berry under the supervision of Walter's widow, Mary Reed Pegues, and the business has remained in continuous family operation since.
In 1952, the firm discontinued its furniture business to focus exclusively on funeral service and relocated to the Pegues family home on Jefferson Street in Tupelo, which remains one of two current locations along with the Saltillo facility on Mobile Street. The funeral home operates an on-site crematory, ensuring that families who choose cremation have their loved ones remain in the care of Pegues staff throughout the entire process.
The funeral home serves families throughout Lee County, including Tupelo, Saltillo, Baldwyn, Nettleton, Mantachie, and surrounding communities. Services include traditional burial, cremation with various memorial options, tribute videos, keepsakes, and live streaming for distant family members.
