McNeill-Legacy Funeral Home traces its origins to the early 1900s, when brothers L.L. and A.S. McGoogan began selling caskets from their downtown Saint Pauls department store. By 1923, A.S. McGoogan was operating a full-service funeral home, which became McGoogan-McNeill Funeral Home in 1958 when Lewis McNeill joined as partner after graduating from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1956.

Lewis McNeill purchased the business in 1965 and opened the current facility at 319 W. Broad Street in 1968. His wife, Sarah Louise McGoogan McNeill, earned her North Carolina Funeral Director's License that same year and joined the operation while serving as organist and choir director at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church for 50 years. Lewis McNeill, a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, also served two terms as Mayor of Saint Pauls and held director positions with United Carolina Bank and the local Chamber of Commerce.

The funeral home is now owned by Jonathan and Kasei Prather. Services include traditional burial, cremation with various memorial options, tribute videos, keepsakes, and live streaming for families unable to attend in person.
