Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory originated in 1926 as part of Cates, Lowe and Cheek Furniture Store before being purchased by J.A. Lowe in 1932. The funeral home initially operated from a renovated house on the corner of Main and Holt Streets in Burlington before moving to a larger, more modern facility on South Church Street in 1955.
The business has remained family-owned across four generations. J.A. Lowe was joined by his son Wade F. Lowe, a World War II pilot, who worked alongside his father until the elder Mr. Lowe's death in 1961. Wade and his wife Doris Wilson Lowe operated the funeral home until Wade's retirement in 1990. Today, James A. "Jim" Lowe II, who joined the business in the early 1960s, manages operations with his wife Paula and a staff of 20 full and part-time employees.
The funeral home maintains an on-site crematory and offers several personalization options including tribute videos, keepsakes, and live streaming for remote family and friends. Pre-planning services are available for families who wish to make arrangements in advance.
