J.P. Louis established Louis Memorial Chapel in 1916, making it one of Kansas City's longest-serving funeral homes with over 120 years of continuous operation. The business remained in the Louis family through three generations—founder J.P. Louis, his son Archard, and grandsons Stan and Jack—before being purchased by the Epstein family, who maintained the funeral home's commitment to serving the Jewish community with Jewish funeral directors rather than transferring to corporate ownership.
The funeral home moved to its current Troost Avenue location in 1963 after operating from several earlier Kansas City addresses including Independence Avenue, The Paseo, and Woodland Avenue. Stan Louis's wife Christa joined the business in 1970, continuing the family-owned tradition that the current owners have preserved.
