E.M. Blackburn Sr. came to Amarillo in 1918 at the invitation of his brothers Walter and Jeff, purchasing the Eakle Funeral Home that same year and opening Blackburn's Funeral Directors on South Polk Street in 1919. As the business expanded, Blackburn relocated to the corner of 5th and Pierce, constructing Amarillo's first funeral chapel in 1941. The business was later turned over to his sons Percy and E.M. Blackburn Jr., becoming known as Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.
A second location was built in 1969 on Martin Road to serve northern Amarillo. The funeral home now operates two facilities: one on Coulter Street and the original Martin Road location. LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw offers traditional funeral services, cremation with various ceremony options, and pre-planning arrangements.
