Anthony Funeral Homes & Crematory began in 1917 when A.J. Kucko, a Slovak immigrant, opened Kucko Funeral Home on Exchange Street in Akron. The business passed through three generations of the Kucko family before ownership transferred to David Anthony, grandson of the founder, who merged with Stephen A. Kertesz of Kertesz Funeral Home in 1987 and built a state-of-the-art facility on West Waterloo Road that became the largest funeral home in Akron at the time.

The firm expanded to multiple locations beginning in 2000 with the opening of Anthony Funeral Home of Green to serve communities south of Akron, followed by the 2002 acquisition of McGowan-Reid and Santos Funeral Home in Cuyahoga Falls. The organization now operates locations in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, and Green, serving families throughout Summit and Stark Counties.

All funeral directors and staff have experienced personal losses themselves, which informs their approach to serving bereaved families. The funeral homes provide both traditional funeral services and cremation, with a stated emphasis on educating families throughout the process.
