Joseph J. Stutz Funeral Home traces its roots to Centralia, where Joseph J. Stutz, Sr. founded the business after earning his mortuary science degree from Eckles College in 1919. His son, Joseph J. Stutz, Jr., joined the firm in 1951 and took over operations in 1960, later purchasing the Higgins Funeral Service in Mount Carmel in 1971 — an establishment that had served the area since 1886. The family renamed that location Joseph J. Stutz, Jr. Funeral Home, extending three generations of continuous family ownership to the Mount Carmel site.
The funeral home serves Mount Carmel and surrounding Northumberland County towns, including Ashland, Coal Township, and Catawissa. Services include pre-planning arrangements and grief support resources for families in the region.
