John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home — Funeral Home in Saint Louis, MO

John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home was founded in 1900 by John L. Ziegenhein Sr. and his four brothers on Cherokee Street. In 1931, the family opened the current location at 7027 Gravois Avenue to bring the next generation into the business, operating under three generations of Ziegenhein ownership until 1995.

The funeral home building features several historic elements in its lobby, including imported black Italian marble walls, a vase from the Japanese pavilion at the 1904 World's Fair, an Italian fountain statue with fish pond, and a grandfather clock that once belonged to St. Louis Mayor Henry Ziegenhein who served from 1897 to 1901.

After more than 60 years under the Ziegenhein family, ownership transitioned to longtime employees in December 1995 to preserve the business's continuity. Former owner Roger Richie, a south St. Louis native, remains active with the funeral home. The firm operates two locations serving St. Louis families.
