J.E. Keever Mortuary has been serving Ennis and Ellis County since 1918, when James Edwin Keever, Sr. purchased J.W. Neal Undertakers and Embalmers. The business has remained family-owned through four generations: Sam A. Keever joined in 1945, David E. Keever became a funeral director and embalmer in 1973 and president in 1983, and Matthew K. Keever joined as a funeral director and embalmer in 2000. The funeral home relocated to its current facility in 1963.
The firm operates an on-site crematory called Twin Oaks Crematory, opened in 2004 to provide direct cremation services. In 1999, the family opened a second location, the Palmer Chapel. The funeral home also maintains an on-site monument display for families arranging memorials.
