James H. Cole Home for Funerals was founded in 1919 by James H. Cole Sr., the grandson of a freed slave, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. The business remains owned and operated by four generations of the Cole family, making it one of Detroit's longest-standing African American family-owned funeral homes.
The funeral home originated at 1710 St. Aubin Street in Detroit's historic Black Bottom neighborhood, established to serve predominantly Black families who were frequently turned away by white undertakers. Today, the business operates two locations in Detroit and continues to serve families throughout Wayne County.
The funeral home offers pre-planning services with in-person consultations and online planning tools, along with financing options through a partnership with Affirm to help families manage funeral costs.
