Hall-Wynne and Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home traces its roots to 1904 when J.S. Hall and George V. Wynne established their firm in downtown Durham. The business relocated in 1926 to its current Main Street site in Durham, the first built-for-the-purpose mortuary in the Southeast, occupying a Greek revival building that combines vintage architecture with modern facilities including an on-site crematory.

Michael O'Connor serves as owner and president after becoming a stockholder and vice president in 2005, then taking over principal ownership in October 2019. The firm remains privately owned rather than part of a corporate consolidation. While the Durham location serves as the primary facility, the funeral home conducts arrangements and services in Pittsboro and throughout Chatham County, as well as Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Orange County, offering both in-home planning and services at families' chosen venues.
