Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel was established in 1944 when Heath and Blanche Griffiths purchased the Bergmeyer Funeral Home in Beatrice. Dick Hovendick joined the firm in 1960, followed by his son Rich Hovendick in 1978, making Rich the third generation in the business. Samantha Thompson, the fourth generation of the family, joined in 2016 and currently manages the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home location in Wymore.
Dick and Rich Hovendick, both licensed funeral directors and embalmers as well as licensed pre-need salesmen, own and operate chapels in De Witt, Adams, and Beatrice, along with the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home in Wymore, which they purchased in 1978. The De Witt chapel operates under the Venrick-Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel name. The Beatrice facility was built in 1956 as the first building in that city designed specifically as a funeral home.
The Laughlin-Hoevet location features a chapel with seating for over 100 people, added in 2013. Jeff Nelson served as manager of that facility for over 30 years before Samantha Thompson took over management in 2016.
