Enloe Mortuary was established in 1922 by Sherwood T. Enloe, Sr., making it the oldest Black-owned business in Cleveland County. Mr. Enloe studied at Massachusetts College of Embalming in Boston and became a licensed funeral director at age 25, later serving as a founding member of the N.C. Funeral Directors and Morticians Association in 1926. His wife, Jennie Lee Friday Enloe, became the first Black licensed beautician in Cleveland County and worked alongside her husband serving families.
The funeral home has remained family owned and operated for over 100 years, now led by Kevin and Pamela Enloe. As one of the first Black-owned businesses of any kind in Cleveland County, Enloe Mortuary continues to serve families throughout the Shelby area with arrangements handled by licensed funeral directors who bring over a century of combined family experience to their work.
