E.G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home was founded in 1977 by James "Tokey" Cummings, Sr., who named the business in memory of his deceased brother Errol Gardner Cummings. Tokey Cummings was a graduate of Alabama State University who trained as an apprentice funeral director with his uncle at Smith and Gaston Funeral Home in Birmingham before attending Jefferson State Mortuary School and establishing his own firm in Montgomery.
The business became a second-generation operation when Tokey's son, James Thomas (Tommy) Cummings, received his funeral director's license and worked alongside his father. Following Tokey's death in 2000, the family continued operating the funeral home he established.
