Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel was founded in 1882 in West Hingham and moved to its current location on Pond Street in 1906 by George H. Downing. E. Gardner Jones joined the firm in 1933, followed by his son Edward G. Jones in 1962, and the Jones family purchased the business from the Downing family in 1972. In May 2012, Frederick W. Slinger, Jr. acquired the funeral home from the Jones family, continuing over 140 years of family ownership and operation.
The funeral home operates as a chapel for all faiths and offers traditional and non-traditional funerals, cremation arrangements, humanistic services, and pre-need funeral planning. Their traditional funeral package includes visiting hours, funeral services at either the funeral home or church, hearse and limousine transportation, funeral assistants and pallbearers, memorial tribute video and website, and obituary listing services.
