L. V. Dowdle & Son Funeral Home was founded in 1925 by Lewis Vaughn Dowdle as the first funeral home and ambulance service in Lamar County. James L. (Jimmy) Dowdle, son of the founder, graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in 1942 and joined his father as a licensed embalmer and funeral director before becoming sole owner. The funeral home operates from a renovated 19th century two-story home in Millport, which was purchased in 1965 and expanded in 1985.
